Special Education Facility Approved for Retford

A proposal to transform an empty industrial unit in Retford into a specialist learning facility has been given the green light by Bassetlaw District Council.

The plans, submitted in June and approved this week, will see the unit on West Carr Business Park, Retford, converted into a dedicated education space for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The application was made by Polly Teach Ltd, a subsidiary of the specialist Portland College, which is based near Mansfield and provides residential care and education for young people with SEND.

Once completed, the new Retford facility will cater for up to 12 students at a time, supported by six staff members. It will be open Monday to Friday, with student hours running from 9:30am to 2:30pm, and staff on site from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Polly Teach offers an alternative learning environment for children and young people aged eight to sixteen who face challenges in traditional school settings due to emotional, social, or behavioural difficulties. The organisation, which became part of the Portland College charity in 2020, already operates across Ashfield, Bassetlaw, and Mansfield.

According to planning documents, the Retford site will provide a bespoke education programme aimed at helping students build confidence, social skills, and self-esteem, while supporting their individual interests and goals.

Access to the West Carr Business Park unit will be through a controlled gate, shared with other nearby businesses, including a dance school. Entry will require a code, ensuring the site remains secure for students and staff.

The development marks a positive step for Retford, bringing a new specialist education option to the area and making use of an otherwise vacant industrial unit.
