How Our Formulas Work
Dogs: The Logarithmic Model
Unlike the old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule, modern science has proven that dog aging is non-linear. Our calculator uses the logarithmic formula: Age (human) = 16 × ln(Age (dog)) + 31. This accounts for the fact that dogs age rapidly in their first few years, then more slowly as they mature. We also adjust for size, as larger breeds naturally have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds.
Cats: The 15/9/4 Rule
Cats follow a different aging pattern. A cat's first year equals approximately 15 human years, the second year equals 9 human years, and each subsequent year equals 4 human years. This reflects how quickly cats reach physical and sexual maturity, then age more predictably afterward.
Rabbits: The 12/8/4 Rule
Rabbits have their own aging pattern: first year equals 12 human years, second year equals 8 human years, and each additional year equals 4 human years. This helps you understand your rabbit's developmental stage and appropriate care needs.
